In a typical pressure gauge, there is a needle that can give a reading ranging from minimum zero psi to a maximum of 60psi.
After knowing the range, one may ask, what is the ideal pressure reading? Unfortunately, there is not a single answer for this. So the answer to this question varies depending upon the size of the pool. The ideal reading also depends upon the plumbing of the pool and the setup of the pool system.
In most cases, the ideal pressure lies somewhere between 10-20 psi, but again, that is not always the case. When you install a pool filter, measure the initial reading of the pressure gauge, commonly known as a baseline reading.
Pressure Gauge Reading Increases
With time, the filtrates start to accumulate inside the tank. This filtrate includes dust, dirt, chemicals, oil, and small rocks. Due to the accumulation of impurities, the water faces difficulty in passing through the filter tank.
As a result, the pressure inside the tank increases. As time passes, the increase in the reading of the pressure gauge is normal. However, when the gauge reading is 10psi more than the initial baseline reading, it is time to clean the filter tank.
Pressure Gauge Reading Decreases
It is also possible that the gauge starts to show a decrease in pressure. It is usually due to any hindrance in the water flow outside the filter tank. In such a case, the water may flow through the skimmer basket, pump basket, pump, or the main drain before getting to the filter.
The reason for decreased pressure is most likely to have some blockage, in any of those areas. To remove that blockage, thoroughly clean all those areas.
Problems in Air Relief Valve
The increase in pressure can be because of a problem in the air relief valve. The filter pressure gauge works together with the air relief valve.
The function of the air relief valve is to release any air trapped inside the filter. Air can trap when you backwash your filter or when the pump basket empties after cleaning.
This trapped air can gather inside the filter and increase the inside pressure. To avoid this problem, regularly vent your filter.
Steading Pressure Gauge Reading
Although increase and decrease in pressure are the common problems. At times, you may observe a steady pressure gauge reading.
To have a constant pressure gauge reading for a few days is normal. But if you are tracking your filter pressure regularly to see any change, and do not find any change even after weeks.
It means that probably your filter gauge is not working. It can be due to many reasons.
- If the gauge reading remains at zero after turning on the pump, it can be due to clogging in the air bleeder. The air bleeder is present under the gauge and is used to measure the pressure. The air bleeder can be unclogged by cleaning the gauge after unscrewing it. Once the air bleeder is clean and unclogged, place it again. If the reading moves back to the normal range, it means the problem is solved. However, if the issue remains unsolved, it indicates that your pressure gauge is broken.
- In the same way, if the reading of the pressure gauge does not move back to zero when the pump is off, it shows that you need a new pressure gauge. The reason behind this problem is that most pressure gauges are cheaply made, and therefore, the needle can become stuck. The good news is that the pressure gauges are also cheap to replace. You can easily replace the pressure gauge by yourself or call a professional for a better result.
